Whilst the rise refers to the distance between the top of the stud wall and the peak of the roof, the run is that distance between the stud wall's top and the center of your house.
A rather simpler process to solve your roof estimate task involves finding your roof's square footage. The width and the length of each portion of your roof are measured. For each plane, the length is multiplied by the width, and then all the panes are added together for the roof's total footage square. To get the total number of squares, the total footage is divided by 100 and since it takes just three bundles of 3-tab shingles (the most prevalent type) to cover each square, the number of shingles needed to cover the roof area can be determined.
Estimating the felt underlayment for your roofing purposes is not a daunting task. After finding the roof's square footage, the number of squares are determined. Determination of the actual number of rolls of the underlayment required is then done. The most common type is the #15 type, and its one roll is known to cover 4 squares. If your roof slope is larger than 4:12, one layer is used but whenever the slope ranges from 3:12-4:12, the amount has to be doubled and 2 layers are put down.
